Used Goods Home
One of the most popular activities in most towns and suburbs is what are known as garage sales. They consist of someone putting out all the ‘stuff’ they no longer want or use and offering it for sale. This is a collection of used goods for sale. Are there bargains to be had? You betcha. It’s the old situation where somebody’s trash is another person’s treasure.
Now the age and condition of items can vary greatly. Some folks don’t want something they bought or were given and which is still brand new or hardly used at all. That still counts as used goods because it is going from one owner to another owner. Some used goods have been around the block and then some but can still attract a high price. Everything is relative. If the item is in demand, it will sell. If more than one buyer is interested, it will fetch a high price.
What sort of things?
‘Used goods’ is a term which covers a wide range of materials. Obviously household effects such as clothes, books, records, CDs, furniture, toys and kitchen and garden items are all considered to be used goods. Now there are traps for unwary players in this. Just because a used item looks okay, it may not do what it is supposed to do. If the item is an electrical appliance, you would certainly want to have it tested at least in a basic way.
With garage sales, there are people who are more collectors than casual buyers. There are people who get to a garage sale before it officially is open and look for used goods they can on-sell at a profit. This is seen by some as unfair on the average punter but there is a lesson here. If you want the best items, be early.
Churches and schools
Fetes and bazaars are popular events with many churches and schools. They use such events to raise funds. They ask people to donate used goods which in turn are sold by volunteers meaning the church or school has few costs and can, hopefully, raise a great amount of money. And there are other institutions as well such as animal shelters, sporting clubs and service clubs like Rotary. Often the quality of the used goods is good to very good and of course the prices are low and certainly far cheaper than a new version.
Online is a major business
Buying used goods in person at a fete or garage sale is one thing. Buying them online is completely the opposite. You may be able to see a photograph of the item but that’s about all. There will be a description of the used goods but in the end you will have to buy without actually handling the item. Mind you there are safeguards and as millions of people buy used goods online every day, there must be some positives in this dealing with used goods. If you like a bargain or enjoy searching for your collection, used goods may be not just your best bet but your only bet.
